What Is Home Insurance?

Home, or homeowners insurance, is a type of property insurance that protects your home property, your assets, and your belongings within the home. In its most basic form, home insurance protects against three different types of incidents: interior damage, exterior damage, and loss or damage of personal assets or possessions. Some home insurance policies also include liability coverage that protects against bodily injuries if they happen on the home property.

There are 8 types of home insurance coverage. The most basic coverage protects your home from damages due to fire, windstorm, hail, or theft, while others include snow or water damages and power surges. Our independent insurance agents can walk you through the coverage options best suited for your home property.

Home insurance also comes with a liability limit, which is the maximum dollar amount the insurance covers on behalf of the insured. Note that natural disasters (commonly known as Acts of God) won’t be covered in your home insurance, but special coverages exist for such events, including earthquakes or floods.

It is important to note that home insurance is not the same as a home warranty, as the latter pertains to repairs or replacements of appliances in the home, such as kitchen or laundry appliances or water heaters. Home warranties also come with an expiration date (usually covered for one year). Lastly, individuals going through a home-buying procedure will require home insurance to obtain a mortgage.

How Much Does Home Insurance Cost?

Home insurance coverage and policies will vary in cost, and it will depend on multiple factors, including the following:

  • Location
  • Home price or building cost
  • Age and condition of the home
  • Home claim history
  • Crime rate
  • Credit history
  • Any added coverage options, such as earthquakes or floods
  • Deductibles

There are a few options to minimize the cost of home insurance. Some ways to reduce costs include raising your deductible, improving your credit score, renovating your home, or bundling different insurance policies, such as home and vehicle. Different Homeowners Coverage Options

Home insurance policies protect your home and offer personal liability and medical coverage. There are three levels of coverage, including actual cash value, replacement cost, and guaranteed or extended replacement cost or value.

  • Actual cash value: This coverage covers the home cost and assets or belongings within the home, but only after depreciation. As such, it covers how much items are worth rather than what you originally paid for them.
  • Replacement cost: The actual cash value coverage applies for this type of coverage; however, it does so without the depreciation of the home assets. It would allow you to repair or rebuild a home to match the original priced value.
  • Guaranteed/extended replacement cost/value: This coverage option allows you to repair or rebuild your home at whatever costs, no matter the policy limit. As such, if there are any fluctuations in the market price for building materials, this coverage absorbs the increase without the homeowner having to pay additional money out of pocket.

Within these levels of home insurance coverage, there are eight policies for homeowners. At its most basic, home protection covers loss or damages due to fire or lightning, windstorm or hail storm, explosion, smoke, vandalism, theft, and volcanic eruption.

There are also broader home insurances that cover the mentioned basic protection but add on snow or ice damage, accidental water overflows, freezing or cracking, and power surges.

For homes located in areas prone to earthquakes or floods, a special form of coverage is required as these natural disasters won’t normally be included.

Protect The Things That Matter to You

There are steps a homeowner can take to protect the things that matter most. For example, you can invest in a security system and keep smoke alarms up-to-date by replacing the batteries when needed. You can also protect your home by doing home maintenance, such as preparing for winter or checking wiring systems.

If an unfortunate event happens to your home, ensure you have a home inventory list that includes photos of your possessions or assets and receipts for any large items. It will make the claim process go more smoothly. Our independent insurance agents also conduct coverage reviews to keep up with any home changes or updates to ensure it matches your home insurance needs.
